Search engine optimization is a large part of internet marketing. 90% of Internet surfers use search engines such as Google and Yahoo to locate particular products and services? If your company is ranked high in the search engines, then it stands to reason that you will sell more product.

Search engines are computer programs that explore the Net in search of webpages. They do this by using “spiders”. (also called crawlers, or robots)

In order to deliver relevant results, the search engine companies have developed special ranking algorithms that calculate the order of search query results. A special program then analyzes the search query, and searches the database for pages that contain this keyword or keyword phrase. Next it analyzes all relevant pages to determine how important that phrase is on that page.

The search engine does not “see” the webpage the way we see it; it reads only the text-based code behind it. Many Web designers are using WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors. This makes designing pages easy. However, some web design programs are notorious for producing bad code that is full of incorrect or superfluous tags.
