   Home Alarm Systems

According to the FBI, a burglary occurs somewhere in the United States every 15.4 seconds.

There are two basic types of burglar alarm systems. You can install a burglar alarm that only sets off an alarm inside the home when unauthorized entry is detected, or you can have an alarm system that is also connected to a monitoring service.

If you choose a monitored alarm system, you will also have to pay a monthly fee for the monitoring.

A simpler home security systems can be installed by you and set up to call up to four predetermined phone numbers in the event of a break-in.

You might also consider perimeter alarms. These concentrate on entry points of your home, so that the alarm will sound before the intruder gains access the home. More than likely the intruder will flee without gaining access to your home.

Alarm systems are effective deterrents especially if you post signs warning that you have a home security system The alarm can be set to instantly go off upon unauthorized entry. Alarm company signs let potential burglars know that your house is wired and capable of getting a response from the police. The reason home alarm systems deter burglaries is because they increase the potential of being caught. Burglars will usually bypass a property with visible alarm signs and will go to another property without a sign.

All alarm systems should have an audible horn. However, these audible alarms should be programmed to reset automatically after a couple of minutes.

Remember these important security steps:

  • Install solid core doors, heavy duty locks, and window security devices
  • Lock all doors, windows, and garages at all times
  • Use four three-inch screws to secure heavy duty lock strike plates in the door frame
  • Never rely on a chain-latch as a barrier to partially open the door
  • Never open the door to strangers or solicitors
  • Call the police if the stranger acts suspicious
  • Alarms aren't only for when you are away. Set the alarm as soon as the family settles in at night
