According to the FBI, a
burglary occurs somewhere in the United States every 15.4 seconds.
There are two basic types of
burglar alarm systems. You can install a burglar alarm that only sets
off an alarm inside the home when unauthorized entry is detected, or you
can have an alarm system that is also connected to a monitoring service.
If you choose a monitored
alarm system, you will also have to pay a monthly fee for the
monitoring.
A simpler home security
systems can be installed by you and set up to call up to four
predetermined phone numbers in the event of a break-in.
You might also consider
perimeter alarms. These concentrate on entry points of your home, so
that the alarm will sound before the intruder gains access
the home. More than likely the intruder will flee without gaining access
to your home.
Alarm systems are effective
deterrents especially if you post signs warning that you have a home
security system The alarm can be set to instantly go off upon
unauthorized entry. Alarm company signs let potential burglars know that
your house is wired and capable of getting a response from the police.
The reason home alarm systems deter burglaries is because they increase
the potential of being caught. Burglars will usually bypass a property
with visible alarm signs and will go to another property without a sign.
All alarm systems should
have an audible horn. However, these audible alarms should be programmed
to reset automatically after a couple of minutes.
Remember these important
security steps:
-
Install solid core doors,
heavy duty locks, and window security devices
-
Lock all doors, windows, and
garages at all times
-
Use four three-inch screws
to secure heavy duty lock strike plates in the door frame
-
Never rely on a chain-latch
as a barrier to partially open the door
-
Never open the door to
strangers or solicitors
-
Call the police if the
stranger acts suspicious
-
Alarms aren't only for when
you are away. Set the alarm as soon as the family settles in at night
