There
are three main types of dishwashers: built-in, portable and drawer
dishwashers.
When looking for a new dishwasher, new features such as adjustable racks, removable top racks and fold-flat
tines offer increased versatility. Improvements also include hidden controls
located on top of the door, inside the unit, and an increased variety of
door colors and panels.
You
may also find models that offer a sanitation feature that provides an
extremely high temperature rinse. Keep in mind that while the dishes
will be sanitized, once you handle them, they are no longer bacteria
free.
Another newer feature offered in many dishwashers is the sensor. The sensor is supposed to increase
energy efficiency by adjusting the amount of water used in the machine
to the soil level of the dishes. Problems have been reported with the
sensor feature in many dishwashers.
Spending more doesn't necessarily mean getting more. There are numerous
moderately priced dishwashers that have as many, if not more, features
than some higher priced models.
When shopping, look for dishwashers with multiple spray arms, a
high-temperature cycle, an internal water-heating element and a built-in
food disposal.
You
may be interested in options such as rinse-and-soak cycles, self
cleaning filter systems and
adjustable racks with fold-flat tines. And, if it takes you awhile to
dirty enough dishes to run the dishwasher, look for a model with the
option to wash the top-rack only or the bottom-rack only.
Remember - Energy Star rated dishwashers will help cut operating
expenses. Energy Star appliances meet energy efficiency guidelines set
by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the United
States Department of Energy, which means these dishwashers use a
significantly lower amount of water and energy than traditional models.
GE,
Whirlpool and Maytag make most dishwashers. KitchenAid and Roper are
made by Whirlpool. Jenn-Air and Magic Chef are manufactured by Maytag.
Hotpoint is manufactured by GE. Both General Electric and Whirlpool
manufacture Kenmore.
An
energy saving tip: If your dishwasher doesn't have an air-dry switch,
turn off your dishwasher after the final rinse and prop open the door to
let your dishes dry without heat.
